What size furnace do I need for a 1,500 sq ft home in Puyallup? Usually in the 45,000 to 70,000 BTU range, but square footage alone doesn’t answer it. A 1,500 sq ft 1920s house downtown with original windows needs meaningfully more capacity than a 1,500 sq ft 2005 build on South Hill. We run a Manual J load calculation, and we frequently find the existing furnace is one to two sizes too big.

Three usual culprits: a long, undersized duct run at the end of the trunk line, an uninsulated garage ceiling below the floor, and no dedicated return. The cheapest real fix is often a single ductless head that lets the room hold its own temperature independently.
