Types of Heat Pumps We Install

Split System Heat Pumps (Ducted)

The most common setup: an outdoor unit paired with an indoor air handler or furnace, distributing air through your existing ductwork. Best for homes that already have ducts. It works like a traditional central system but runs on heat pump technology instead of straight gas heat.

Ductless Mini Split Heat Pumps

An outdoor unit with one or more wall mounted or ceiling cassette indoor heads, no ductwork required. Ideal for additions, older homes without ducts, garage and ADU conversions, and room by room control. More detail on our ductless mini split page.

Dual Fuel (Hybrid) Systems

A heat pump paired with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles the vast majority of the year; the furnace takes over during a cold snap. Very popular in the Pacific Northwest for homeowners who want efficiency with a gas backup they already have.

What Installation Actually Involves

Free consultation and load calculation. We measure the house square footage, insulation, window area, duct condition and size the equipment to it.
Options, not a single price. You get good/better/best with the operating cost differences explained, plus rebate paperwork we handle for you.
Installation. Most straightforward ducted heat pump replacements take one to two days. Ductless systems run one day for a single zone, two to three for multi zone. Full system changeouts with new ductwork can run three to five days.
Permits and inspection. We pull the mechanical permit and meet the inspector.
Commissioning. Refrigerant charge verified by weight and superheat/subcool, static pressure measured, airflow balanced, thermostat configured, and a walkthrough with you before we leave.

Heat Pump FAQs

How long does a heat pump installation take? A straight swap on an existing ducted system is usually one to two days. A single zone ductless install is typically one day. Adding ductwork or converting from electric baseboard heat can take three to five days.

Do heat pumps actually work in Western Washington winters? Yes. Standard models hold full capacity well into the 20s, and cold climate models like Mitsubishi Hyper Heating produce usable heat below 0°F. Our design temperature in the South Sound is far milder than that.

What size heat pump do I need for a 1,500 sq ft home? Usually somewhere between 2 and 3 tons, but square footage alone doesn’t decide it. Insulation, window area, ceiling height, and duct capacity all matter. We run a Manual J load calculation before quoting oversizing causes short cycling, humidity problems, and premature wear.

What rebates can I get? PSE currently offers up to $2,400 for electric forced air or zonal electric to heat pump conversions and $1,500 on standard air source heat pump replacements, plus federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credits up to $3,200. Can I keep my gas furnace? Yes that’s a dual fuel system. The heat pump does the day to day work and the furnace covers the coldest days. It’s often the cheapest path to air conditioning if your furnace is newer.

How long do heat pumps last? Fifteen to twenty years with annual maintenance. Coastal installs near saltwater need coil rinsing to hit the upper end of that range.

Do I need a permit? Yes, a mechanical permit is required in every jurisdiction we serve, including the City of Tacoma and unincorporated Pierce County. We pull it.
