Safe to DIY
Change your air filter
Every 30 to 90 days. Match the size exactly (see our filter size guide for how to read the dimensions). Insert with the arrow pointing toward the furnace or air handler. No tools needed.
Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit
Rake, hand-remove, or blow debris away with a leaf blower. Keep 24 inches of clearance on all sides.
Rinse the outdoor coil with a garden hose
Turn off power at the disconnect first. Spray from the inside out (open the top or side of the unit if you can, and spray outward through the fins). Never use a pressure washer; fins bend easily.
Reset a tripped breaker
If your HVAC breaker trips, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call. Something is drawing too much current and it is not going to fix itself.
Change thermostat batteries
If your thermostat screen is blank or flashing a low battery icon, pull it off the wall and check for AA or AAA batteries in the back. Cheap fix.
Vacuum vents and return grilles
Dust builds up on floor and ceiling registers, especially the return. Vacuum them a couple times a year.
Set your thermostat schedule
Learn your thermostat. A 2 to 4 F setback overnight in winter or setup during summer workdays can cut your bill meaningfully. If you have a heat pump, do not use aggressive setbacks; large recovery swings kick on the electric back-up heat.
Clear the condensate drain
Pour one cup of white vinegar down the condensate drain line every couple months during cooling season. Prevents algae clogs.
Call a Technician
Anything involving refrigerant
Refrigerant leaks, charging, evacuation, recovery, brazing. All of this requires EPA 608 certification, licensed refrigerant handling, and calibrated gauges. Attempting it yourself is a federal EPA violation with real fines, and if you get the charge wrong you destroy the compressor. Not a DIY territory.
Electrical work beyond a breaker reset
Replacing a capacitor sounds simple. It is a $30 part. But capacitors store lethal voltage even when power is off. Every year a homeowner in the Puget Sound gets hospitalized trying to replace one without discharging it first. Not worth it.
Gas leaks or gas smells
Leave the house, call PSE emergency line (1-888-225-5773) and then call an HVAC tech. Do not turn any switches on or off inside. Do not use a flame to search for leaks.
Furnace short cycling
Turns on, runs 30 seconds, shuts off, repeats. Could be a dirty flame sensor ($10 fix), could be a cracked heat exchanger (thousands, and dangerous). A technician can tell in 15 minutes. Do not guess.
Loud metallic banging or grinding
Bearings failing, motor coming apart, loose blower wheel. Shut it off and call. Running it further can turn a $400 repair into a $2,000 replacement.
Repeated ice on the outdoor coil
Some frost is normal on a heat pump. A solid ice block or ice on top of the unit means the defrost cycle is failing. Diagnostic time.
System will not turn on at all
You have checked the thermostat (batteries good, mode correct, temp set), the breakers (not tripped), the filter (not clogged), and the outdoor disconnect (on). If none of that works, it is a control board, transformer, safety switch, or wiring issue. Time to call.
Do Not Even Think About It
Adding refrigerant from a big box store canister
Illegal, dangerous, and it does not fix the underlying leak. Every year we see homeowners who added R-22 or R-410A from an internet canister and either overcharged the system or introduced non-condensables that ruined the compressor.
Replacing a capacitor without professional discharge
Capacitors can hold a charge for weeks after power is off. The right way is to short across the terminals with an insulated screwdriver held by an insulated handle, with rubber gloves on, in a specific way. Youtube makes this look simple. It is not.
Bypassing a safety switch
If your furnace is not lighting because a pressure switch is open, that switch is telling you something is wrong. Jumping it out to force ignition can vent carbon monoxide into your house. There is a reason it is there.
Replacing an outdoor unit yourself
Even if you have a friend who is “handy,” the refrigerant piping, evacuation, brazing, electrical, and control wiring all require certification and specialized tools. And warranty on new equipment is void without professional installation documentation.
