PNW Humidity Control: When Your Tacoma Home Needs a Dehumidifier

Tacoma is a humid city. Not in the “sticky summer” sense like the Southeast, but in the “your basement smells like a wet dog year-round” sense. Getting indoor humidity right is one of the most under-appreciated things you can do for comfort, health, and your home’s structure.

Look for the tells

  • Condensation on the inside of single-pane windows in winter
  • Musty smell in a basement or closet

Check the crawlspace

  • Run bath fans during and 15 minutes after every shower

Cheap: crawlspace vapor barrier

6-mil poly sheeting laid over the dirt floor and up the foundation walls, taped and sealed. If you can DIY it, materials are $300 to $600. Professional install $1,500 to $3,000. Massive humidity impact.

Moderate: standalone dehumidifier

A good 50-pint dehumidifier in a basement or living area can drop humidity 15 to 20 points. Plan to empty it or plumb it to a drain. Cost: $250 to $500 for the unit. Watch for a good drainage plan; hand-emptying gets old.

Best: whole-home dehumidifier tied to HVAC

A whole-home dehumidifier (Aprilaire E100, Ultra-Aire, Santa Fe) ducted into your return uses the HVAC blower to distribute dry air throughout the house. Set it and forget it. Cost: $2,500 to $4,500 installed. Best solution for homes that stay stubbornly humid despite basic measures.

Consider: ERV or HRV

Winter Humidity in Newer Homes

Does a heat pump help or hurt humidity?
