Winter (December, January, February)
What to expect
Most of the winter is 35 to 45 F. Modern heat pumps hit their peak efficiency in this range, delivering 3 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity. Your December electric bill can genuinely be lower than a gas furnace bill in the same house, especially with TPU‘s rates.
Defrost cycles
When outdoor temps sit at 30 to 40 F with high humidity (basically every PNW winter day), the outdoor coil frosts up. The heat pump reverses briefly to melt the ice. You will see steam rise from the outdoor unit. This is normal, expected, and happens every 30 to 90 minutes. During defrost, the indoor system may blow cool or use back-up heat for a couple minutes.
Cold snaps (teens and 20s)
A few days a year, temps drop into the teens. Modern cold-climate heat pumps still produce heat down to 5 F and useful heat below 0 F. But capacity does drop. If your system is properly sized and your envelope is decent, the heat pump keeps up. If it is undersized, back-up heat (electric strip or gas dual fuel) kicks in.
The 2028 arctic outbreak scenario
Every 5 to 10 years, Tacoma gets a 3 to 5 day stretch of unusual cold (single digits). During these events, back-up heat runs more. Your electric bill will spike for that billing period. This is normal and expected behavior for any heat pump anywhere in a cold climate.
Spring (March, April, May)
What to expect
Peak heat pump efficiency season. Mild temperatures mean the unit runs at 30 to 50 percent capacity, which is where variable-capacity or two-stage heat pumps are most efficient. Your March and April electric bills should be some of the lowest of the year.
Pollen impact
Alder pollen kicks off in late February, Douglas fir and grass through May. Your outdoor coil accumulates pollen. Rinse it in April; take a garden hose to it (power off first) and spray from inside out through the fins.
Summer (June, July, August)
What to expect
Most summer days are 75 to 85 F, well within heat pump cooling range. The unit dehumidifies as it cools, which matters more than most people realize; muggy 75 F is more uncomfortable than dry 80 F.
Heat dome events
The 2021 heat dome hit 108 F in Tacoma. Even modern heat pumps struggle above 100 F because their outdoor coil cannot reject heat efficiently when ambient air is hotter than the desired coil temperature. During a heat dome:
- Set thermostat higher (78 to 80 F) rather than trying to hit 68 F
- Close blinds and curtains during the day
- Do not run heavy appliances (dryer, oven) during peak afternoon
- Consider a portable AC in a bedroom if the whole-home system cannot keep up

Big leaf maple, Douglas fir, and cedar deposit debris around the outdoor unit. Rake it regularly. Do not let leaves pack against the coil.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the coldest a heat pump will still work?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps (Mitsubishi Electric Hyper Heat, Trane Ascend, etc.) produce useful heat down to negative 13 F. Capacity drops with temperature, but they do not shut off in cold weather. Older units (pre-2015) started struggling around 20 F.
Do I need gas back-up in Tacoma?
Not necessarily. Many Tacoma homes run heat-pump-only with electric strip back-up in the air handler for cold snaps. If you already have gas and want to keep it, a dual fuel setup uses the gas furnace only when the heat pump is at its efficiency limit.
Will my electric bill really be lower than gas?
