A wrong thermostat can force your heat pump into expensive auxiliary heat, short-cycle the compressor, or lock out staging entirely. A right one can quietly save you a couple hundred dollars a year and add years to the life of the equipment.
This guide is what we tell customers when they ask which smart thermostat to buy. We install these ourselves and pull the ones that do not work well in our climate.
Why Heat Pump Thermostats Are Different
A standard air conditioner or gas furnace has one job at a time: heat or cool. A heat pump has three jobs: heat with the compressor, heat with auxiliary electric strips (or a backup furnace), and cool. Some newer heat pumps also have two compressor stages plus defrost cycles.
A thermostat that treats a heat pump like a furnace will “call for aux heat” every time you bump the temperature up two degrees. That is a very expensive way to warm your house because the auxiliary strips draw 5 to 15 kilowatts. If you have ever noticed your electric bill spike in a cold snap and wondered why, this is usually the reason.

Best overall: Ecobee Premium (or Ecobee Enhanced)
Ecobee handles heat pumps correctly out of the box. The setup wizard asks the right questions (O vs B reversing valve, single vs dual stage, aux type), and the staging logic is smart: it lets the compressor run longer before calling aux, which is exactly what a Pacific Northwest heat pump wants. Remote temperature sensors come with the Premium and are useful in Craftsman homes with cold bedrooms upstairs. Voice assistant is built in if you want it, ignorable if you do not.

If you like a big, clear display and a menu system that reads like an appliance rather than an app, this is your thermostat. Wireless remote sensors work the same as Ecobee’s.

Ecobee Premium supports HomeKit natively, so you can automate around location, Home app scenes, and Apple’s presence detection. Nest does too but its heat pump behavior is quirkier (see below).
Nest Learning Thermostat: proceed with caution
We install Nest thermostats when customers request them and they work fine on many systems. On heat pumps, though, Nest’s “Time to Temperature” and Early-On features have historically been aggressive about calling aux heat. Recent firmware has improved this, but we still see homes where Nest is choosing aux over compressor unnecessarily. If you already own one, it will work. If you are shopping fresh, Ecobee or Honeywell are safer for a heat pump.
Mysa (for ductless mini-splits)
If you have a ductless mini-split, most models use their own included wall controller or a wireless remote. Mysa makes a wall thermostat that speaks the IR language of most major mini-split brands (Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin, LG). It gives you a real wall thermostat, scheduling, and smart-home integration for a ductless system that came with only a remote. Not every model works with every mini-split, so check compatibility before buying.
What we do NOT recommend for heat pumps
- Basic $30 to $50 programmable thermostats without heat pump wiring. They will either not work at all or run your aux heat constantly. The difference in your first winter electric bill will dwarf the price of a real heat pump thermostat.
- Nest Thermostat E. The cheaper Nest lacks several settings that matter for correctly configured heat pump operation. Get the Learning Thermostat or step over to Ecobee.

Settings That Matter (After Installation)
Buying the right thermostat is half the battle. Configuring it correctly is the other half. Once installed, we recommend:
- Aux heat lockout: 35 degrees F outdoor. Above 35, force the compressor to do the work. Below 35, aux is allowed to help. For newer cold-climate heat pumps you can push this down to 25 degrees F. Older systems may need it higher.
- Setback delta: 2 degrees maximum. Do not do 62 at night and 72 in the morning. That 10 degree jump will trigger aux heat. A 2 to 3 degree setback is enough to save energy without kicking on the strips.
- Fan mode: Auto, not On. Continuous fan on a heat pump can actually cool the room when the compressor is off, because the coil retains cold air. Auto lets the system cycle naturally.
- Enable staging. If your heat pump has two stages, make sure the thermostat sees stage 1 and stage 2 correctly. Most systems will run in stage 1 the vast majority of the time.
- Cycle rate. Set to 3 cycles per hour for heat pumps (not the higher furnace value).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a smart thermostat myself?
If your current thermostat has a C-wire (common wire providing power), yes, it is a screwdriver-and-app job. If you do not have a C-wire, either add one (some kits ship a power adapter that works) or call an electrician or HVAC tech. Do not skip the C-wire and rely on battery-only power in a smart thermostat; it dies fast and the reboots are frustrating.
Will a new thermostat void my heat pump warranty?
No. Manufacturers care that the thermostat is compatible with heat pump operation (which any of the ones above are). They do not require a specific brand. Some equipment (Bosch, Mitsubishi) has proprietary controllers for advanced features, but a standard smart thermostat still works for basic operation.
What is a reversing valve O/B terminal?
Heat pumps reverse refrigerant flow to switch between heating and cooling. That switch is controlled by a reversing valve, and the thermostat energizes it via either the O terminal (Trane, Carrier, most brands) or the B terminal (Rheem, some others). Ecobee, Honeywell, and Nest all ask you which one your system uses during setup. If you do not know, look at your existing thermostat wiring: if there is a wire on O or on B, that tells you.
Do I need remote sensors?
For a single-story home or a rambler, usually no. For a two-story home, absolutely. The main-floor thermostat cannot know that your upstairs bedrooms are 6 degrees warmer in the summer or 4 degrees colder in the winter. A sensor upstairs lets the thermostat average or prioritize based on where you actually are.
Should I get the geofencing feature?
Geofencing sets back the temperature when your phone leaves the house. It works well for single people and childless couples. For families with school-age kids or shift workers, the constant recovery cycles can end up costing more than they save. Try it for a month and check your bill.
Are these compatible with time-of-use electric rates?
PSE and TPU offer optional time-of-use rate plans. Ecobee has native support for shifting pre-cool and pre-heat windows around peak rate hours. Honeywell can be scheduled around it manually. Nest is somewhere in between. If you are on TOU, Ecobee is the clearest choice.
